Key Insights from the Mobile Industry Survey 2024

Key Insights from the Mobile Industry Survey 2024
6:34

Mobile communications is undergoing a huge transformation marked by rapid technological advancements, shifting consumer demands, and the ever-present quest for innovation.

A key industry survey conducted by Mobile World Live, and sponsored by Telna, sheds light on the prevailing sentiments, challenges, and opportunities that lie ahead for mobile professionals. With responses from over 150,000 industry insiders, this survey offers a comprehensive overview of the current state and future prospects of the mobile sector.

5G And Beyond

One of the most striking revelations from the survey is the industry's robust optimism surrounding the economic impact of 5G technology. It’s not entirely surprising given the predictions of 5G adoption skyrocketing to 54% by 2030.

There are nonetheless immediate challenges, such as the crucial task of monetizing 5G investments as 32% of respondents said generating a return on 5G investments a major challenge. That includes navigating the intricacies of deploying private networks and leveraging AI technologies.

The need to harness the full potential of 5G while addressing these challenges is shaping up to be a pivotal narrative in the industry's journey forward.

eSIM: A Paradigm Shift in Connectivity

The survey also points to the emergence of eSIM technology, outlining why it represents a significant shift towards more flexible and efficient connectivity solutions. Offering numerous benefits including interoperability, reduced costs, and enhanced security, eSIM technology is poised to redefine the mobile landscape.

Yet, the survey reveals that consumer awareness and the ease of provider switching remain significant hurdles. Addressing these challenges will be crucial for unlocking the full potential of eSIM technology and ensuring its widespread adoption.

Open RAN – And Network Diversity

The survey also found that Open RAN technology is another signpost of innovation, promising to democratize the RAN space by offering greater vendor diversity and cost efficiencies. Despite the enthusiasm for open RAN's potential, concerns regarding security and integration complexities highlight the need for a balanced approach.

Open RAN, or Open Radio Access Network, is a concept focused on interoperability and standardization of RAN elements, including a unified interconnection. It integrates a modular base station software stack on off-the-shelf hardware, enhancing 5G RAN performance through efficiency, intelligence, and versatility.

Open RAN allows for an ecosystem where network operators can select RAN elements with standard interfaces from various vendors without changing their hardware, fostering flexibility and innovation in wireless communication.

The industry's willingness to navigate these challenges and embrace Open RAN's transformative potential speaks to a broader commitment to innovation and diversity in the mobile ecosystem.

Future Networks: Charting the Course to New Horizons

Space – always the final (or next) frontier. The exploration of non-terrestrial networks (NTN) and the anticipation of 6G technology is capturing the collective imagination. These advancements promise to extend connectivity to the most remote areas and support groundbreaking applications, heralding a new era of global connectivity.

6G-NTN, which stands for 6G Non-Terrestrial Networks, is a project funded by 6G SNS that aims to integrate non-terrestrial network components into the 6G infrastructure. This initiative focuses on enhancing connectivity for users in underserved areas by complementing terrestrial networks with elements like satellites, HAPS (High Altitude Platform Stations), or drones.

The goal is to provide seamless coverage globally, benefiting both consumers and industries. The project involves designing and validating key technical, regulatory, and standardization enablers for the integration of terrestrial and non-terrestrial components into 6G, emphasizing multidimensional network infrastructure, multi-constraint RANs, and multi-user terminals.

However, the journey to commercialize these technologies underscores the importance of addressing monetization, security, and deployment challenges. This came through in the survey as only 14% of respondents had started to invest in 6G, with 37% saying 6G won’t be a commercial priority until 2030.

Navigating the Future Together

The insights from the Mobile Industry Survey 2024 point to both unprecedented opportunities and formidable challenges. An interesting side note was that the number one priority for 2024 was building more sustainable mobile communications businesses (alongside making the most of AI). Indeed, Advanced AI was reported by 30% of respondents as the most attractive new business sector (while 40% suggested GenAI is the most overhyped trend in 2024).

As the industry embarks on this transformative journey, collaboration, innovation, and strategic focus will be key to unlocking the vast potential of the mobile sector.

In an era defined by rapid change and technological breakthroughs, the mobile industry stands ready to embrace the future, charting a course towards a more connected and innovative world.

The landscape of the mobile industry is evolving at an exhilarating pace, and the insights from this survey provide valuable guidance for stakeholders at every level. As we move forward, the industry's collective efforts to address the challenges and seize the opportunities highlighted in the survey will undoubtedly shape the future of mobile connectivity, for a world that is more connected, efficient, and innovative.
